Surfing is one of the most physically demanding sports you can pick up as a beginner — it asks for balance, core strength, shoulder endurance and hip mobility, often all within the same wave. Yoga trains almost every one of those qualities directly, which is why pairing the two has become standard at surf camps around the world, including ours.
Balance and Body Awareness
Standing on a moving board requires constant small adjustments through your ankles, knees and hips. Yoga poses that challenge balance — like tree pose or warrior III — train the same stabilizing muscles and improve your body awareness, so those adjustments start to happen more naturally when you are up and riding.
Shoulder and Back Recovery
Paddling is the most physically taxing part of surfing for most beginners, and it is usually the shoulders and lower back that feel it first. A gentle yoga session after a surf lesson helps release tension in those areas, improves flexibility over the course of a week, and reduces the risk of the stiffness that often stops people from getting back in the water the next day.
Breathing and Calm Under Pressure
Wiping out, getting caught inside by a set, or simply feeling out of your depth in the ocean can trigger a stress response that burns energy fast. The breathing techniques practiced in yoga carry directly over to surfing, helping you stay calmer and recover your breath more quickly when a session gets intense.
How We Combine Surf and Yoga
At Anamar Surf, yoga sessions are scheduled around your surf lessons rather than competing with them — typically in the late afternoon or early evening, once your body has had time to rest from the morning session. You do not need any yoga experience to join; sessions are guided at a pace that suits everyone in the group. Take a look at our packages to see which ones include daily yoga alongside surf coaching.
