Beginner's Guide to Surfing in Morocco: What First-Timers Need to Know

Never stood on a surfboard before? Here is exactly what your first surf camp in Morocco will look like, and how to get the most out of it.

Beginner's Guide to Surfing in Morocco: What First-Timers Need to Know

Morocco is consistently ranked as one of the best places in the world to learn to surf, and for good reason: warm-ish water, gentle beach breaks, a long, forgiving surf season, and instructors who are used to complete beginners. If you have never touched a surfboard before, here is what to actually expect.

Day One: Land Practice Before Water

Every good beginner lesson starts on the sand, not in the water. Your instructor will walk you through paddling technique, how to read a wave, the "pop-up" (the movement from lying down to standing), and basic surf etiquette so you understand the unwritten rules in the lineup. Only after that will you head into the shallows.

Choosing the Right Beach

Beginners in our camps surf on soft, gently breaking beach waves rather than the powerful reef and point breaks that Morocco is famous for. These beach breaks are far more forgiving, with sandy bottoms and whitewater waves that are ideal for practicing your pop-up safely.

What to Expect Progress-Wise

Most complete beginners stand up and ride whitewater within their first one or two sessions. By the end of a typical week-long camp, many guests are catching small green (unbroken) waves and starting to turn. Progress depends on fitness, ocean confidence and how many sessions you do, which is why our packages are built around multiple days of coached surfing rather than a single one-off lesson.

  • Session 1–2: Paddling, pop-up technique, riding whitewater
  • Session 3–5: Catching waves independently, first green waves
  • Session 6+: Turning, positioning yourself in the lineup, reading sets

Practical Tips for First-Timers

A few small things make a big difference for beginners heading to Morocco:

  • Book more than one lesson — surfing is a skill built over repeated sessions, not a single afternoon
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest — the North African sun is stronger than it looks
  • Expect sore shoulders on day two — paddling uses muscles you do not normally train
  • Trust your instructor's wave selection — they are picking waves matched to your level, not the biggest ones out there
