Surf Photo Etiquette: Capture the Moment Without Missing It

How to take great photos on a surf trip while respecting the water, other guests and the local coast.

Ask before posting people

Everyone travels differently. Before sharing a close photo of another guest, especially one with children or a private moment, ask them first. It is a small gesture that makes the camp feel respectful and easygoing.

Keep the beach clear

A phone, towel, and water bottle are fine; a large setup in the middle of the path is not. Leave access open for surfers carrying boards and keep an eye on your belongings when the tide changes.

Put safety before the shot

Do not paddle into a busy take-off zone just to get an angle. A good image is never worth getting in another surfer’s way. From the sand, the shoulder, or a safe channel, you can capture plenty of real surf energy.

Remember to be present

The best surf-trip memories are not always on your camera roll. Take a few photos, then put the phone down for the paddle-out, the sunset, or the meal that follows. You will remember the feeling as much as the picture.

A room. A board. A little adventure.
