Surf Etiquette in Morocco: A Friendly Guide for Your First Sessions

A simple introduction to sharing the lineup respectfully, safely, and with more confidence.

Start by watching the lineup

Before paddling out, take a few minutes to watch how the break is working. Notice where people enter the water, where they sit, and where the waves start to break. This small pause helps you choose a safer route and understand the rhythm of the spot.

The person closest to the peak goes first

The surfer closest to where the wave first breaks has priority. If someone is already on the inside, let the wave go and wait for the next one. It is the easiest way to avoid collisions and it keeps the session relaxed for everyone.

Communicate early and kindly

A quick look, a clear call, or a simple apology can make a big difference. If you accidentally take a wave, paddle back out, say sorry, and give the next good one to the person you cut off. Surfing is more fun when the lineup feels welcoming.

Let your instructor guide the first sessions

At a surf camp, your coach knows the local conditions and can help you find the right take-off zone. Follow their advice, keep a comfortable distance from other surfers, and progress step by step. Good etiquette is part of becoming a confident surfer.
