Choosing Your First Surfboard: Why Bigger Is Often Better
A beginner-friendly guide to volume, stability and picking the right board for your first waves.

Stability builds confidence
For a first board, extra length and volume are helpful, not embarrassing. A larger soft-top gives you more float, makes paddling easier, and creates a stable platform for learning the pop-up. It lets you focus on timing and balance instead of fighting the board.
Do not rush to a small board
Short boards can look exciting, but they demand more speed, balance, and wave knowledge. Moving to a smaller board too early often slows progress. Your coach will know when you are ready to take that next step.
The right board depends on the conditions
Even experienced surfers change boards according to the wave. On smaller, softer waves, more volume can be the fun choice. On a surf camp, the equipment is selected to match your level and the spot, which takes the stress out of deciding.
Focus on the feeling, not the label
The best board is the one that helps you catch waves and enjoy the session. If you are smiling, standing more often, and paddling with confidence, you are on the right equipment.
